Back Pain and Constipation
Back pain and constipation are symptoms that often go together. In fact, back pain and general
gastro-intestinal problems
are some of the most common symptoms for many patients. Back pain due to a
pinched nerve
is the most common form of physical back pain that can also cause constipation. However,
psychological back pain
is a far more frequent cause of these combined symptoms and can create agonizing problems without any structural neurological compression at all.

Back Pain and Constipation Causes
Nerves in the lower back regulate the function of the intestines. Peristalsis is controlled by the autonomic nerves. These nerves can fall victim to physical compression due to:
* Herniated Discs
* Facet Joint Syndrome
* Spinal Stenosis
* Back Muscle Spasm
Most nerve related symptoms are actually the result of
oxygen deprivation
to the affected area. This cause of back pain is often
misdiagnosed
and the patient has a very small chance of finding true relief. When the autonomic nerves are affected by any of these conditions, the result can be a combination of constipation and back pain. Other common combination symptoms are back pain with
chronic diarrhea,
gas pains, heartburn, bloating, indigestion or general stomach discomfort.
Recommendation on Back Pain and Constipation
Chronic back pain
is most typically the result of some unresolved psychological issues. Stomach and intestinal problems are also normally caused by some negative emotional stress. It makes perfect sense for these
combination back pain
syndromes to coexist in the same patient at the same time. Both types of pain are part of the complex interactions between the mind, the body and the spirit. Extended periods of unexplained constipation can be an indicator of serious health concerns. It is advisable to report such symptoms to your doctor if they do not improve in a few days.
