Neck Pain Relief

Neck pain is a relatively common problem and luckily, neck pain relief is usually available without surgery or other drastic treatments. There can be many causes of pain including muscular injuries, herniated discs, or degenerative disc disease. The vertebrae and discs in the neck get a lot of wear and tear, since they are flexed often. Sometimes this constant usage can cause painful conditions to develop.

Auto accidents and falls are also leading causes of neck injuries and pain. The head is heavy and acts as a weight, causing “whiplash” injuries in many instances. When the head is thrown forward, the neck may suffer from hyperflexion. When the head is pushed backwards, the neck may suffer from hyperextension. Both of these conditions can cause injury of the soft tissue, bones, or discs in the neck.

Neck Injury

An injury to the spinal cord at the cervical level can result in complete paralysis, or quadriplegic condition. This means that the patient may be paralyzed from the neck down and lose the use of both arms and legs.

Even a less serious injury to the cervical area can cause symptoms ranging from headaches to shoulder pain to pain in the arms or hands. The common name for a neck injury that leads to symptoms in the arms or shoulders is a “pinched nerve”.

Normal Neck Conditions

It is completely normal to have some disc degeneration in the cervical area. The constant movement of the neck will produce flattened discs in the majority of people over age 30. Just because a disc has dehydrated does not make it a problem. Make sure that you get a second medical opinion if you have neck pain and the only diagnosis is degenerative disc disease.

Recommendation for Neck Pain Relief

If the injury is muscular, try not to aggravate the condition. Do not wear a brace or cervical collar for a muscular condition. The movement of the head should be kept conservative, but some movement will accelerate the healing process. If you have chronic neck pain, or pain that comes and goes unpredictably, there is usually another cause for the pain. Get examined by a doctor to rule out any cancer, tumors, or severe spinal conditions. If you have tried several treatments already, you might have looked in the wrong place to find your neck pain relief. I would recommend Knowledge Therapy for chronic pain conditions.
